FAQs

What is Band Camp?

Band camp is the time for students to start preparing for the upcoming fall marching season. During band camp, students work hard by learning drill and perfecting music, while also meeting new people in band. They get the chance to not only work together with friends in their section, but are able to meet with the student leaders and instructors and have the opportunity to better understand the way things work in the program. Band Camp is held at University High School and students will learn how to march, how to play, and how to have a good time in the program

When does Band Camp occur?

Band Camp occurs typically in late August. The exact band camp schedule will either be announced at the end of the previous school year, or be made available on the UHS band website during the summer. However, for planning, most band camp days go from about 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with lunch break between 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. It is imperative that students are on time with all the materials required for a successful day.

Must every band student attend band camp?

No. Only students in the marching band are required to attend band camp. Students who are enrolled in only daytime band class do not attend band camp.

When do band camp students register for school?

The school provides a custom time slot for all 10-12 students to register. During this time, students will be excused to go register. Specific times of registration will be mailed out by the school administration.

However freshmen will register with their Impact groups on a different day. That information will be made available by the administrators and Impact.

Sophomores (10) are also required to take a hearing/vision test. The date for that is generally on the sophomore registration day, different from the marching band registration date. They will have to take the test at 7:30 a.m. and will report promptly to where rehearsal is taking place when they are done.

The administration of UHS is flexible with athletes and registration. They make times available for us to register, and we work with them with scheduling. However it is key that students have all their materials ready for registration.

How can I ensure my child comes to band camp properly prepared?

Because band camp takes place during summer, it will be very hot. We will be on the field under the sun for many hours a day, so it is important to be prepared. Students must be wearing comfortable clothing, something you will be able to stand in under the sun for several hours. Tennis shoes are also a requirement. Students who wear anything other than tennis shoes will be asked to leave. In addition, students MUST:

1. Eat a good breakfast.
2. Bring water (and stay hydrated throughout the day!).
3. Wear a hat or sunglasses if you desire.
4. Wear sunscreen.
5. Wake up and arrive to school ON TIME!

What is the parent meeting?

The parent meeting typically takes place on a Thursday of band camp. At least one parent from each family is required to attend the meeting. Parents will go on the field and see the progress the students have made in their competitive field show. After the performance, parents and students will head into the UHS theater for a presentation by the directors.
